One was the victim of a truck smashing into the back of the car, where fortunately, although the car was a wreck, the dogs travelling inside escaped unscathed, as they were travelling securely in a crate. The second was not so lucky, and was hit by a car and killed. I know one of my new puppy owners has a fantastic set up in their van, with custom made metal cages for the dogs to travel safely in, so this post is for the rest of us, to make sure we do our best to let our friends travel safely with us. There are several ways to secure a dog in the car, either canvas or metal crates being a very popular choice. There are also harnesses that click straight into the seatbelt if you wish them to travel on the seat. It is important too that you have a collar with ID tags on your dog whilst travelling, a good friend of ours had a terrible accident, the air ambulance arrived to cut her out of the car and whisk her off to the hospital, and all the while nobody realised there had been a dog travelling with her. Fortunately, The gorgeous Leonburger ran away from the scene but was wearing ID on his collar. He was found very late at night, and collected safely by our friends parents. Also be aware of how easily a dog can make a bolt for freedom once the car doors are opened, so a lead is a must for travelling too, it only takes a few seconds for a tragedy to occur. I refound this lovely video on Youtube of how to travel safely with your dog, it is in Polish, but persevere and you will see the beautiful brown Barbet Zoia with Ania her owner and Nelly's breeder
